Family Locator Filters out the Treats from the Tricks

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Oct 28, 2013 3:14:00 PM

Halloween is a fun and mysterious time. However you want to protect your family from things that go bump in the night. Halloween is the perfect time to have Verizon's Family Locator installed on your smartphone so you know where your little ghosts and goblins are while they are out trick-or-treating. You may have kids that are on the age cusp where they are starting to become independent and want to go out on their own. Family Locator is a great way to keep some peace of mind when you send them out into the night.

Cellular Chloe's Top 5 Vacation Tech Tips

Tech tips for Whatever Type of “__cation” you are Planning This Summer

Whether you plan to hit the open road or stay local when the kiddies get out of school for summer vacation, I’d like to share some handy vacation tech tips.

1. Stay off Facebook
Even if your Facebook account is on security lockdown and only your immediate family can see it, I NEVER advocate posting either vacation status or pictures until you return. So many people don’t take into consideration that you are basically saying, “My whole family is in Florida, here we are at Space Mountain in Disney…why don’t you stop by our house at your convenience (right up until I post that I have safely landed at the airport) and help yourself to all of our valuables.”  It’s truly amazing how smart and dumb people can be at the same time.

2. Watch your house from your phone
Take advantage of the awesome technology that you can connect to your cell phone so you can monitor your house while you are away.

Windows Phone 8 Takes On the Powerhouse Smartphones

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Nov 13, 2012 4:27:00 PM
Chances are you aren't a geek like me, having worked in this industry for 12 years, so you probably don't know that Windows phone sales actually outranked the iPhone for the first 2 years while the "smartphone" category was still in its' infancy.

I was rather fond of my first Windows 6 phone, in fact, I'm almost positive it was my very first "smartphone," as I was never a huge Blackberry fan. After the enormous learning curve, it honestly was very clunky, I could get my email, use the 5MP camera and look at pictures on a large touchscreen, albeit resistive. The mention of the large touchscreen was meant to poke fun at the Blackberry. That 3.2" screen was heavenly!

Apple's iPhone and Android eventually romped right over Windows and Blackberry, taking over the marketshare. So for the last few years we have been talking about the battle between Apple's iOS and Android. WP8 will be be jumping back into the ring and I think it's coming strong. Microsoft is admittedly spending more on this "launch" than they've ever spent in their history. The question I am most asked is, which Operating System is better. More often than not, they mean between iOS and Android but I should prep you for the third OS that's making a strong comeback.

iOS Apple iPhone

Pros
Fixed ecosystem-everything is intergrated so it's very easy to use, sync, backup etc.
Very intuitive Interface makes for a short learning curve.
All devices are running the same version.
Devices running on iOS are extremely stable. No freezing or locking up.

Charity Miles. The New App in My 15 Must-Have Apps

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Nov 5, 2012 1:52:00 PM

Recently I had the pleasure to meet and walk about six and a half miles in New York’s Central Park with Gene Gurkoff. Gene is the is the CEO and founder of Charity Miles, which is essentially a smartphone app but it goes way beyond downloading yet another app to your phone.

Gene's grandfather has Parkinson's Disease. Like many of us, when someone we love is afflicted with a disease, we become increasingly aware of that disease and begin to notice fundraisers and walks, bracelets, etc that support the research related to finding a cure. If able, we sign up for walks or marathons and enlist our family, friends and co-workers to sponsor us and begin to try to do our part to help raise money for that cause that has become dear to us. This is exactly what Gene did and as you are probably aware, there are only so many times you can tap into your friend's and co-workers wallets.

Smartphones Provide Safe Trick or Treating

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Oct 22, 2012 5:24:00 PM

If you read my blog, surely you know my propensity for snarkiness or I prefer to refer to it as "telling it like it is. Occasionally a subject arises that even I can't make fun of and that is safety for your children. I'd like to talk about a few options using your smartphone (and in some cases basic phone) to keep track of your family. That doesn't mean just the kids. Often times this might apply to the older generation of your family or a family member with special medical needs.
Here are some options.

6 Really Cool Things to do With Your Smartphone

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Oct 15, 2012 7:52:00 PM

It never ceases to amaze me when someone actually tells me something you can do with your phone or mentions an app I didn't know about. It's rare but it happens! More often than not I find new apps by browsing through my phones. My phones and I spend a lot of time together!
I enjoy finding ways to use your phone to be more productive. However, sometimes I find things that smartphones do that are just plain cool. Here are a few of them.
