How Your Smartphone Will Get You a Better Night Sleep?

Posted by Cellular Chloe on May 9, 2013 2:04:00 PM

Are you getting enough sleep? Is it productive? I have 2 apps and a few optional plug-ins that will help you get that question answered. Maybe you already know the answer is "no" and perhaps you can learn some things about your sleep hygiene and find out how to improve your ability to get as much deep sleep as possible. Simply getting more sleep isn't always the answer.

For a total of $4.18 (obviously not including the device to run it on!), I have greatly improved my quality of sleep and I will show you how!

HTC Thunderbolt Finally Gets an Upgrade

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Feb 5, 2013 11:30:00 AM

Sometimes I forget that people actually keeps phones until they have an upgrade available which is about 20 months because I generally don't have a phone much more than 3. Its a blessing and a curse. By the time I get it all fine tuned just the way I like it, it's time to give it up and start all over again. So don't be hatin' on me!

Superbowl Companion Apps

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Feb 1, 2013 4:08:00 PM

NFL Mobile

Naturally the first one I have to mention is NFL Mobile. It is the Must-Have app for the game. It is preinstalled on most Verizon devices. If you don't have it, it's just a download away. All the stuff you would expect to find there plus STREAMING!
Non-Verizon customers, just because you picked the wrong carrier, I won't hold that againstt you. You can still use NFL Mobile, however, you will miss out on some cool content (like streaming) that Verizon customers have access to. Just sayin'!
If you have access to a computer CBSSports.com will be streaming the game.

Cellular Chloe's 2012 Best of the Best in Wireless

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Dec 31, 2012 11:10:00 PM
Another year is practically upon us so I thought it was a good time to reflect on a few things that I thought made the wireless world great this year.

Best Smartphones

Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD Reviewed on Oct 26, 2011
Pros:
Awesome long life battery
Solid, sturdy phone with Gorilla Glass and a Kevlar back
Splashproof
Gorgeous HD screen
Cons:
Swype texting is touchy, occasionally loses connection with your finger
halfway through the word.
Final thoughts:
I am a very heavy phone user and I have finally found a phone that will get me through the whole day of use (including GPS and Bluetooth). It is also packed with Motorola's Smart Actions which are ways you can customize the phone to do even more for you. Like turning on your WiFi when you get to work, or putting the phone into Drive Mode when you get in the car. Set these actions up once and never worry about them again!

HTC DNA
Cons:
Disappointing Battery considering the technology available
Irritating door on micro USB port
16GB memory with no microSD expansion
Final Thoughts: This is a beautiful, sleek device, with a gorgeous HD screen. The only thing I am skeptical about is the 2020mAh battery, as I am used to 3300mAh. The 16GB with no microSD isn't going to be a problem if you take advantage of cloud storage.
Pros:
Beautiful large screen
Super thin
Battery Life
Cons:
Predictive text is not very good. I loaded SwiftKey instead .
Final Thoughts: Nice big screen with tons of options for personalizing this device to carry out your every whim. The S-Voice and S-Beam are great features

Apple iPhone5
Pros:
Great Camera
Bigger Screen
4G LTE
Cons:
No NFC
Disappointing Battery
Final Thoughts: Most of the new features (turn by turn directions, simultaneous photo and video, larger screen size, better front-facing camera, panoramic pictures, and an 80% smaller plug) were already in place on Androids, but if you are a die-hard Mac user, the iPhone has come much closer to being able to do all the cool things the Android fans have been bragging about for a while.

Best Phablet

Galaxy Note 2
Pros:
The S-Pen might have a little something to do with it, but this thing is just the right kind of wonderful for being productive. It's just the right size, the screen can lend itself to using two apps at the same time, you can hover over things to preview with the S-Pen without having to fully open them. The screen is so big it offers picture in picture!
Cons:
I honestly haven't found one!
Final Thoughts:
This is my blue ribbon, first place, you'll have to pry it out of my cold dead hands, hands-down best device. It fits all the criteria I look for in the device I am going to use on a daily basis; great battery, fast, able to use Swype or SwiftKey Flow sucessfully, extra storage if needed,   large, sharp screen and great camera.

Best Apps

Evernote I have taken to cloud services like Bieber takes to ridiculous fashion trends. Evernote allows you to store and organize URLs, pictures, sound files (voicenotes) and documents. This type of service is ideal when you are shuffling many different file types within a project and it also gives you the ability to share/sync if you are working on it with other people or if you want to pick it up from another device. It's also a great place to file your recipes so you can access them at the grocery store!
CamScanner
This works on both phones and tablets, Android and iOS. It scans your item with the device's camera or you can select a photo from the gallery, it will automatically crop, and turns it into a pdf. You can tag your documents for easier searchability. Then you can upload them, send by sms, bluetooth, Evernote, Dropbox, email or whatever other service you have loaded on your device.
QR Droid   We all know what a standard barcode looks like, this is a QR (Quick response) code. It can be used for a number of different marketing strategies. When scanned it can provide a URL, a telephone # or a message that will come up in text format. QR Droid is also capable producing these nifty little squares of information!.
Pocket
This is that handy place that you save all of the articles and URL's that you never have time at the moment you see it. Instead of keeping the window open or bookmarking it, Pocket is a cloud service that you can have access to from any device. So if I save an article to my work desktop, I can access it from my phone while I am waiting in line at the grocery store. It's ALL about productivity for this Gadgetista!
Gas Buddy  If you drive a bus, I mean SUV, you'll thank me for this. Gas Buddy gives you a listing of all the gas station prices in your zip code or close to your location so you can find the cheapest
For example: say the place you normally get gas is .22 cents per gallon more expensive then a place down the street. If you get 20 gallons, you'll save $4.40 per fill up. If you fill up 5 times a month that's a $22.00 savings. Alternately, if you report gas prices you can earn yourself some free gas.
Astro  This is an essential file manager that allows you to move, erase, rename files. It also has image and text viewers, Networking, SMB, Bluetooth, SFTP, ZipTar, downloader, thumbnails, search files, application manager, task manager and attachments.
Lookout
will keep your phone and information safe. Lookout is a great all around app that checks the websites that you are about to visit, and blocks phishing and malware sites in real-time. It also has a phone locator service in case your phone is misplaced or stolen.
A Wallet Password  Keep all of your valued passwords arranged by category under one master password's lock and key! Just don't forget the master password! And don't use your child's name to keep them all safely guarded!
Pulse  Is an aggregated mosiac of all the news stories from all your favorite news sources. You can easily see a graphic and title of over 20 articles in a colorful collage and expand on the one you want to read.
Google Now  This is difficult to sum up in a short paragraph so   click here  to read more about this awesome notification service .
Picture Password To be explained in a "coming soon" video.

Best Keyboard

Swift Key Flow
Why? I was in love with Swype for years until this mysterious stranger SwiftKey came along. This bugger not only predicts the word you are typing but it also does a pretty dam good job at guessing your next word. It's like kismet! Enter SwiftKey Flow, SwiftKey and Swype got together and the rest is history.
Notes: It is stubborn, if you manually enter something, sometimes it thinks it knows you, better than you do and it keeps auto correcting. So if you don't want to end up on Facebook with a auto correct gone wrong screenshot, you might do well to check your outgoing message one last time before you caress the send button.

Best Browser

Google Chrome
Why? I like that you can Bookmark to the Cloud with hardly any effort at all and pick up those pages in your chrome browser on another device. You don't need a third party app, it happens within the Browser you are already using. Oh yeah, did I mention it's also a very fast browser? Some browsers don't support Google in search and I'm a Google Girl through and through!

Best Speakers

Monster Clarity HD

Why? For under $100 you get the sound equivalent to a to a major stereo set up in a package about the size of a box of animal crackers. People around you will be amazed at the sound that comes out of this thing. And so will you, of course! It can be used wirelessly or with a 3.5 mm cord and you can even use it for conference calls.

Best Tablet

Google Nexus 7

Why? Because it isn't hung up on a carrier so updates come to this bad boy first! You have to have WiFi if you want to use it so it isn't for the faint of heart, I meant the faint of WiFi! Normally I would never suggest this since it is not on the mighty Verizon but if you are tempted to get a Kindle or Nook or any e-Reader, give this a look. Otherwise I'd stick with a tablet on the Verizon network. If you are a Big Red fan, you can always use your Verizon smartphone or JetPack to give this some 4G LTE WiFi.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

Why? It's thin, lighter than original 10 inch tablets and it has the amazing screen we've come to expect from a Samsung device. Watching movies on it is a pleasure and well, need I say more?
Notes: It still has a proprietary plug for charging. Ewww.
iPad Mini

Why? For starters, the i in front of the name is probably all you need to know. I will always give credit where credit is due, even though I'm an Android fan, Apple products are generally great sound products. Not everyone wants to push the envelope to see exactly what their device can do.

Best Case-Waterproof

Lifeproof
Why?
I trusted this thing so much that the second I had my iPhone tucked safely inside, I tossed it in a swimming pool. Thank goodness I installed it correctly because it came out dripping wet but only outside the Lifeproof case!
Notes: I would be remiss if I didn't mention however that some accessories aren't Lifeproof friendly so you might want to check this before running off on vacation with a USB cord that might not fit into the phone's charging port via the almost unforgiveable area there is to plug it in through. Also, they say that you shouldn't "install it" more than 10 times and expect it to still make a good seal.

Best Case Overall

Otterbox
Why?  If you have EVER owned an Otterbox product you would just agree and move onto the next category. However for those of you who haven't invested in the best cell phone case EVER, there's a few things you should know. First of all, Otterbox offers different levels of cases ready to accept the rigors YOUR phone endures. Whether you work in a boutique and want a pretty, uncumbersome case to protect your phone or a forklift operator whose phones falls out of your pocket on a daily basis, Otterbox has the case for you! The case shown above is the reflex series. It is light and streamlined yet with built-in air pockets in the corners that absorb impact energy, kind of like bumpers!

One of Samsung's "Next Big Things" (Galaxy SIII) Gets Jelly Bean

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Dec 13, 2012 3:22:00 PM

For some reason I had myself thinking "the Next Best Thing that's Already Here" aka the Samsung Galaxy SIII already had Jelly Bean but alas it does not. It is still on Ice Cream Sandwich. So guess what, a device that I already thought was outstanding is going to get better. Trust me Jelly Bean is awesome! If it just included Google Now, I would be happy but the upgrade has much more than just that. It like Christmas morning is here already or will be Friday because that is when the update starts rolling out. A few Verizon devices already have Jelly Bean like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the Droid RAZR HD family of 2.

Here is Verizon's release:

I Woke Up In Love This Morning: A Tale of Google Now

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Dec 6, 2012 12:17:00 PM

You already know that I'm a geek so it shouldn't surprise you that I heart the Partridge Family! The question is what did I wake up in love with? I had the Jelly Bean update waiting on my phone when I hit the snooze on my alarm. I actually got up since there was a update instead of going right back to sleep. That's one way to wake this Gadgetista out of a slumber!

Click on the thumbnail above for full details

I'm not going to lie...I have been desperately waiting to get the most of my Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD. I mean with a name like Droid RAZR MAXX HD shouldn't it just give you the most right from the get-go? Well here's the deal. Any time now an update will be rolling out and here is what you can look forward to with the upgrade to the Android Operating System 4.1 (Jelly Bean). By the way, I'm calling it Jelly Bean Lite because there is a Jelly Bean 4.2 as well.

GOOGLE NOW
Just the right information at just the right time. Get today’s weather before you start your day, know how much traffic to expect before you leave for work and when the next train will arrive as you’re standing on the platform. Cards appear throughout the day automatically.

VOICE SEARCH NOTIFICATIONS
Sometimes you’d rather just speak your search query. Android lets you search the web with your voice, and it’s convenient for getting quick answers on the fly. It speaks back to you and is powered by the Knowledge Graph, bringing you precise answers and ranked search results.
Take action directly from the notifications panel. Send emails, return calls, share photos and more. Notifications are expandable and you scan multiple emails, see event details or full images and more.

SMART KEYBOARD
More accurate and relevant dictionaries have been implemented. Jelly Bean’s keyboard guesses the next word before you type it and voice typing now works even when you don’t have a data connection, and text-to-Speech capabilities have been improved.

ADDITIONAL JELLY BEAN ENHANCEMENTS

  • Move between Home screens with more intuitive graphics and smooth transitions.
  • Enjoy more reactive and uniform touch responses.

SOFTWARE UPGRADES

  • Improved voice and data connectivity.
  • Native calendar settings have been improved for a better user experience.
  • Improved reliability and connectivity of Back Up Assistant Plus & Visual Voicemail.
  • Time stamp shown in outgoing multimedia has been corrected.

APPLICATION UPDATES

  • Video calling portal and Accessories Application has been preloaded.
  • Verizon Video has been removed.
  • Color Application has been removed.
  • Fully integrated Amazon app suite has been preloaded (includes Kindle, Amazon MP3,
  • IMDb, Audible, and Zappos).

When the rollout begins and you start REALLY making the most of you RAZR MAXX and MAXX HD, hit me up so I can start checking my software update button!

Peace out

-CC

iOS v. Android v. WindowsPhone

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Oct 1, 2012 2:46:00 PM

So Many Phones, So Little Time. Which OS(Operating System) is Right for You?

If you are already due for an upgrade or expect to be relatively soon, I have 2 words for you. Good Luck.
There are so many phones out there and it's never going to slow down. Well, at least not before the end of the year. Starting today we are officially in the 4th quarter of the year and that means we'll be seeing even more before the holidays.
So what it all boils down to, unless you are a slave to your OS(Some people on iPhones will never switch no matter how great Android is) is what is the best OS for you? Two months ago I'd only be talking about Android and iOS but on October 26, WindowsPhone is making a comeback with Window 8 and they have some really sweet devices coming. Soon it may become a three-way battle if Windows8 is well received. It's a nice clean OS and I for one am looking forward to getting my hands on one. I am not including Blackberry because their Marketshare is very low. Here are a few fun iOS vs. Android cartoons. I never get sick of these!

If you are trying to pick a new smartphone, your best bet is to decide which OS is best for you.

iOS Apple iPhone

Pros
Fixed ecosystem-everything is intergrated so it's very easy to use, sync, backup etc.
Very intuitive Interface makes for a short learning curve.
All devices are running the same version.
Devices running on iOS are extremely stable. No freezing or locking up.
