The Droid X is Getting GREAT RECEPTION!

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Thu, Jul 08, 2010 @ 11:04 AM

I have yet to decide how I feel about the iPhone coming to join the line-up over at Verizon. I know how I feel about Verizon, I think that's pretty obvious. I wouldn't use any other carrier...if you paid me! I know how I feel about Android devices and for that reason alone I tend to think that we no longer need the iPhone but the truth is, if the iPhone does come to Verizon in January or later for that matter, masses of iPhone devotees will jump ship and come to the largest and most reliable  wireless voice and 3G network and join the 92.8 million strong to make it 192.8 million strong.

The truth is, sure we do, all the people who refuse to give up their iPhones, (can't say I blame them, I am a long-time Apple fan and it is a great device) will make the switch to a network where the thing will actually work and then Verizon will be 192.8 million customers strong.

Either way, it's not here yet and the Droid X will be in a matter of days so lets talk about it and the run it's going to give the iPhone 4 for its money. The hype over iPhone4 vs. Droid X has outed some ads and video spoofs on TV. Note in the below ad the antenna dig referring to the iPhone 4 issue with blocking the antenna with a normal hold...

Droid X ad
I know, it's kind of small, here's what it says...“Most importantly, it comes with a double antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just about anywhere to make crystal clear calls. You have a voice. And you deserve to be heard.”      The boldface is a nice touch! If you are unfamiliar with the iPhone 4 antenna issue, you can't hold the phone in your left hand and hold it to your left ear without experiencing dropped calls (well, more than usual) because that blocks the antenna. Oops.

Next is a YouTube of a skit on Letterman poking fun at the iPhone4. Sorry about the quality, it's kind of shakey. The best part is the tagline at the end. I also noticed it was posted by a Droid! The battle rages on!
There are plenty more funny spoofs where that came from over on YouTube. Some maybe borderline inappropriate so I'll let you decide if you want to pop over or not.

Anyway, here are some of the features the Droid X has over the iPhone4.

iPhone4   Droid X
- 3G Mobile HotSpot
-
Preloaded with Swype
- HDMI output
AT&T Verizon Wireless
3.5" high res 4.3" high res screen
max storage 32GB max storage 40GB
5MP camera w/ flash
8MP camera w/ dual flash
no Flash 10.1 support planned

Will have Flash 10.1 support
in late summer
2 microphones 3 microphones
talk time 7 hrs talk time 8 hrs
- removeable battery
AT&T issued 2 GB data cap on smartphones unlimited

The key factor here is the fourth feature down. That in itself is reason to buy the Droid X!

Verizon and Droid X have my vote. What are you thinking?

COMMENTS

Can you confirm what method their using to help us find the nearest Pub ? G/M's or vzNav. I'm almost certain I read somewhere that it's vzNav, though I can't see them breaking their stride with...Google everything ! At least I'm hoping not.
AND, do think they will be better prepared in the inventory (amount wise) Dept. , so we don't run into another Incredible (or the lack there of) shortage, mainly on day 15 ?
BTW, got to give Apple credit in that arena. Though it is "apples" & oranges in the respect of the X basically being just a new handset being released vs (the iphone 4) being like a...what's the word, era ?

Bryan,
It is in fact Google Navigation. I've used both and it is far superior because even if you don't know the name of your fav pub, the powers that are google will find it for you. I find it to be much more intuitive than VZNav. You can get VZNav on it though if you prefer, they are opening the Droids back up to more VZ services. They can do that because the X is a Motorola driven product, not dictated by Google like the original Droid was.
As far as inventory, as always, they assure us it will be there...that said, we'll see what happens. I'm quite sure its not using the AMOLED screen that is holding up the Incredibles. They had to switch to a different screen to be able to get them produced.
I do know that the accessories won't be able for several weeks out.
As far as Apple goes, hey, I won't begrudge them, they are doing everything right. Since they are, we can't reinvent something they just reinvented but I consider the Droid to be an era in itself...First of all, its the first open source platform which is what makes it so attractive to developers, and we need them to make the apps and keep the engine rolling. Within the next year EVERY carrier and EVERY manufacturer will have an Android OS device in their line-up. That to me is an era in itself. As great as the iPhone is, it's still only with one manufacturer and one carrier. If the iPad didn't come along, there would be very few developers still working on apps for that i OS platform. There are a few tablets in the works with a possible Android OS platform, that along with the iPhone finding it's way to Verizon in January should really shake things up. Don't blink!!!
