A Cell Phone Picture Is Worth 1000 Words and 1000TB of Data

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Tue, Feb 25, 2014 @ 04:33 PM

Typing words into Google is so last year. Even speech to text to search

Google is so five minutes ago! The hip way to search now is with a picture! Whoever first said "A picture is worth a thousand words" must have time traveled to see what Google had to offer.
Here are a few apps that will enable you to use your phones' camera to get all the information  you need and then some about a subject that you took a picture of.

Google Googles

Since Google is a powerhouse of knowledge, having an app that will check algorythms against their database of images will allow you to scan almost any picture and identify it (unless you are trying to identify yourself in a selfie!) I have used it to identify plants to avoid, like poison ivy as well as plants I wanted to buy like lemongrass. You can alos snap a picture out of a magazine, the cover of a book or a CD or even artwork. This app is fantastic. Android Apple

Vivino

Ever have a glass of wine at a bar or a party you wanted to remember so you could buy it for yourself? Vinino will let you scan the label and retrieve all the information you'll want to know, like ratings, price and info about the winery. More importantly, you can save all your scans for future reference.

Amazon

Last but certainly not least is the mobile app for best shopping site ever. essentially the app is just the mobile version of Amazon's shopping app but it has a unique feature of allowing you to snap a photo to use in searching for an item. Using the photos below as an example, I took a photo of an SD card and used it in my seach. The next screen gives me a few buying options of the photo I sent.

It looks like it's going to be a balmy 30 degrees in New York for the big game and we are not going to get the storm of the century that threatened to push Superbowl Sunday to Superbowl Monday. Who's idea was it to hold it in New Jersey anyway? Wherever you plan on tuning in, here are some ways to follow it and interact online with other fans.

The NFL Super Bowl XLVIII (48) is happening on Sunday, February 2, 6:30 PM on FOX and is being played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos are bound to freeze their cups off!

Take Great Holiday Photos with Your Smartphone or Tablet

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Mon, Dec 23, 2013 @ 02:36 PM

Many of the more current smartphones have some unique photo options that will help you get the best holiday shots. For example, new Samsung smartphones give you the option to take video and snap a photo at the same time.

Simultaneous Photo/Video
smartphone camera tricks

If you have kids opening presents this is a great use for this feature. The way it works is while you are videotaping you simply tap on the shutter release. It won't disturb your video at all.

Photo Burst

photoburst

iPhone 5S and others have this feature. If your device has this, be sure to try it out so you know what to expect. When you hit the shutter button on the iPhone5S, it will fire off 10 photos per second for as long as you are holding down the shutter button or the volume up key. This is especially helpful when photographing kids or pets or anything that you have a hard time getting the right shot because of movement.

HDR (High Definition Range)

Many phones have an amazing built-in feature called HDR that enhances stabilization and exposure as you take the picture. You simply need to put it in that mode and the device does the rest, The phones that have it are: Samsung Galaxy S 4, HTC One, LG G2, the AT&T version of the Nokia 1020 and iPhone 4, and 5's.

Camera Apps

If your camera is lacking any of these features you can always download an app to enhance some of its capabilities. That's the beauty of smartphones, right?

Camera Zoom FX is one of the best camera apps for adding features like time lapse, burst mode, voice activated shots, as well as many filters and effects. (Android $2.99, iTunes $3.99)

ProCapture adds advanced features like Timer, Burst, Reduced Noise, Wide Shot and Panorama to your Android device. (Android $3.99)

Aviary have a lot of great editing tools for the "after photo". You can crop, get rid of red eyes, add text or drawings or filters for the instagram effect and oh so much more! This is my go to editing app.

If you happen to be sportin' a Windows phone, Windows Marketplace has every kind of lens and filter you can think of.

Here is a great link for 11 smartphone camera tips and tricks that Samsung put together

Happy (photo) shooting and Happy Holidays!

The Best Kept Secret Accessory for Smartphones and Tablets

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Wed, Dec 18, 2013 @ 09:43 PM

Power On The Go

Even though todays wireless devices are pretty advanced in their use of thinner cell batteries, they'll still never manage to give you all the power you need in a day especially if  you aren't sitting next to an outlet all day. There is a very simple solution to this. The are called a variety of terms, "battery banks" or "power on the go". The bottom line is, you charge them when you are near an outlet and they store the power until you need it. Then you plug your wireless device into it. It's really quite genius and so many people have no idea they exist! They are definitely a best kept secret (that I really want EVERYONE to know about) in the wireless industry. These are a great gift idea for that person you know that has everything...Mother's Day, Father's Day, Graduation, Birthday, and naturally Christmas/Hannakah!

If you don't have a Playstation, XBOX or Wii you can pick up a device like the Google Chromecast ($35) that will stream videos like below to your TV. Best Shopping Sites/Apps to Weed Through All The Deals

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Mon, Nov 25, 2013 @ 03:34 PM

Before you buy ANYTHING online, be sure to check RetailMeNot first. This site generates coupon codes for many major retail sites. I have saved up to 30% that I wouldn't have even known about if I hadn't meandered onto this site.

Retailmenot

Slick Deals has both a website and an app that will aggregate user info as to where the best deals are. It is updated daily.

My favorite site for deals but there is only one major deal a day is Woot. They now have Wine Woot and Kids Woot spin offs for more deals. Sign up but shut off your email notifications because they send the new product announcement out in the O'dark hundred hours! There are many apps for Apple and Android like Woot Check that will alert you to the Woot of the day.

CNET Cheapskate is written by a guy named Rick Broida and he is as cheap as they come BUT he enlightens us to some great deals! There isn't a mobile app specifically for the Cheapskate segment but CNET does have an app full of awesome information.

If you are out in the store and you see an item you want to pick up, try scanning it with RedLaser and make sure you are getting the best deal.

Coupons.com is another web and mobile service. Fimnd deals locally and use the coupons online or in the store.

I hope I helped you save some green. If so and you want to buy me a little something, I am in the market for a Microsoft Surface!

Peace out

Cellular Chloe's Smartphone Public Service Announcements!

Posted by Cellular Chloe on Mon, Oct 14, 2013 @ 02:50 PM

Don't Send Risque Photos. Just Don't!

Beware, there is a new app that can grab those "Snapchat" pictures you think you are sending and they are getting erased. I think the best rule of thumb is to never take or send a photograph that you don't care if it's out there for the world to see. There are too many ways for someome to intercept those images for their own use and you have no control over what happens to them. The app is called Snaphack. It is in no way affiliated with Snapchat, the cost is $.99 and you will have no way of knowing the photo was opened, screenshot or hacked. Normally snapchat will let the sender know if the recipient tries to screenshot the picture. In this case because it is a 3rd party app, snapchat has no way of knowing it was opened or grabbed. So just don't send risque photos and you won't have to worry about it.

How to Browse and Keep Your Findings Undetected

The Android app Orbot lets you browse the web anonymously on your phone all the while blocking advertisers and networks from gathering information about you based on your mobile web browsing history. For you iPhone users there is Onion Browser.

Google is Going to Use your Name and Photo

Google shared endorsements are headed this way. If you have ever +1'd a page or reviewed a Google app, you may wind up on a Google product or service advertisement. Sound familiar? Facebook tried to do this and it made quite a stir. Currently the Facebook version of this is still in limbo. Google however will be doing this starting November 11th. If you don't want to be part of their advertising you can change a privacy setting ahead of time.

Hope this helps keep your info private!

Peace out
